How to Use a Stump Grinder and Choose the Right Walk-Behind Model
A stump grinder removes a tree stump by chipping it away with a spinning cutter wheel fitted with carbide teeth, leaving wood chips and a hole you can fill and plant over. This guide covers how to use a walk-behind stump grinder safely, and how to choose between mini, standard, swivel and self-propelled models.

How to use a stump grinder
1. Prepare the site
- Call 811 a few days before you grind. It is the free US “call before you dig” service that marks buried utility lines. Grinding can reach several inches below ground.
- Cut the stump as low as you safely can with a chainsaw.
- Clear rocks, gravel, metal and debris around the stump. They damage the cutter teeth and can be thrown hard.
- Keep people and pets well back from the work area.
2. Gear up
Wear safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, work gloves, long pants and sturdy boots. Read the operator’s manual for your machine.
3. Grind in passes
- Start the engine and position the cutter wheel just above the front edge of the stump.
- Lower the wheel a little at a time, about an inch or two, and sweep it slowly side to side across the stump.
- After each pass, move forward slightly and repeat until you have worked across the whole stump.
- Continue below ground level until the stump is gone. Several inches below grade is usually enough to replant grass, deeper if you will plant a tree or build there.
Let the machine do the work. Forcing the cutter deeper than it wants to go stalls the engine and dulls the teeth faster.
4. Clean up
Rake out the chips and fill the hole with topsoil. The chips make good mulch elsewhere once they have aged.
How to choose a walk-behind stump grinder
Engine power
Horsepower determines how fast you can grind hard and large stumps.
- Around 6 HP (the Dosko 6HP Mini): small stumps, tight spaces, occasional use.
- 13 to 14 HP (the Dosko 13 HP walk-behind and the Brave 14 HP Kohler): homeowners with several stumps, landscapers and rental fleets.
- 20 HP (the Dosko 20 HP walk-behind): professionals and large hardwood stumps.
Fixed, swivel or self-propelled
- Fixed head: you sweep the cutter by pivoting the whole machine on its wheels. Simple and durable.
- Swivel: the Dosko Swivel Stump Grinder lets the cutter swing side to side while the machine stays put, which is less tiring and faster on big stumps.
- Self-propelled: the Dosko 20 HP Self-Propelled drives itself to the stump and over rough ground, which helps on large properties.
Access and transport
Check the machine’s width against your narrowest gate, and its weight against how you will load it. Compact walk-behind grinders fit through standard garden gates and into a pickup bed with a ramp.
Engine brand and service
Most of our Dosko grinders use commercial Honda GX engines, which have wide parts and service availability across the US.
Buy or rent a stump grinder?
Renting makes sense for one or two small stumps. If you have many stumps, clear land regularly or run a landscaping or tree business, owning a grinder pays off quickly and lets you work on your own schedule.
Frequently asked questions
How deep does a stump grinder go?
Most walk-behind models can grind several inches below ground level, and larger machines go deeper. Check the maximum depth in each product’s specifications.
How long does it take to grind a stump?
It depends on the stump’s size, the wood and the machine’s power. A small softwood stump can take minutes with a mid-size grinder. A large hardwood stump can take much longer with a mini grinder.
Do I need to remove the roots?
Usually no. Grinding the stump below grade is enough for lawns. The remaining roots break down over time.
What other equipment helps with yard clean-up?
Our log splitters, walk-behind blowers and debris truck loader make light work of the rest.
