The Baratza Vario+ in black is a compact coffee grinder with electronic controls and an update to an already popular model. It steps up from the Virtuoso in power, versatility and operation while keeping the compact body and satin nickel-plated accents. A high-torque motor keeps grinding quiet but quick.

Three separate doses can be programmed for automatic grinding on demand, at 1.6 grams per second for fine espresso grinds and 2.2 grams per second for the coarser grinds used in a French press. Ceramic burrs do not heat up as much as steel ones, which helps protect the coffee’s natural flavors, and they stay sharp longer. Metal adjustment knobs replace the plastic ones on the previous model and are more durable, and an included burr removal tool gives access to the burr chamber for cleaning leftover grounds. The removable hopper lifts off and goes back on easily, which helps when the grinder sits under a cabinet.
